Sunrise and sunset times, computed
Today's sunrise, sunset, length of daylight and solar noon for 448 cities, 282 of them in the United States. In New York the sun rises at 6:46 am and sets at 6:50 pm today, Thursday, September 24, 2026. Every time on this site is worked out from the city's own latitude and longitude at the moment you load the page, not read out of a table.

How the times are calculated
The engine is the NOAA Solar Calculator, which is the standard reduction of Jean Meeus's solar position routines. For any instant it produces the sun's declination and the equation of time, and from those and a latitude it gives the hour angle at which the sun reaches a chosen altitude. Sunrise and sunset use an altitude of -0.833 degrees rather than zero, which accounts for the radius of the solar disc and for atmospheric refraction lifting the image of the sun over the horizon. Skip either correction and every time would be several minutes out.
The conversion into local clock time goes through the IANA time zone database. That matters more than it sounds: it is what makes the half hour offsets of India and South Australia, the 45 minute offset of Nepal, and every daylight saving transition come out right without a single offset being written down by hand. You can see the same database at work on the timezone converter.
Polar day and polar night
Above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle the sun does not rise or set every day, and the hour angle that produces a sunrise time simply has no solution. A calculator that does not check for this prints a broken time or a blank. The city pages here say plainly that the sun does not set, or does not rise, and give the number of days a year it happens. Tromso in northern Norway, Longyearbyen on Svalbard and Utqiagvik in Alaska are the clearest examples in this list.
Why there are no per-date pages
Somebody searching for a sunset time wants today's, and a page that recomputes on every request answers that on every day of the year. A page frozen to one date answers it once. So this family has one page per city, carrying today's times plus the month by month table and the extremes of the year, rather than a page per city per date carrying a single stale row.

Questions
- How accurate are these sunrise and sunset times?
- They agree with published almanac values to within about a minute for the coordinate given. The remaining difference is mostly which point in the city the coordinate refers to, and the local horizon: a hill to the east delays sunrise by more than any rounding here.
- What time does the sun set in New York today?
- 6:50 pm on September 24, 2026, after a sunrise at 6:46 am.
- Do the times include daylight saving?
- Yes. Every time is the local clock reading in the city's own zone at that instant, so daylight saving is already in it wherever it applies.
- Why is solar noon not at 12:00?
- Because a time zone is an hour wide on the clock but fifteen degrees wide on the ground, and because the equation of time moves apparent noon by up to sixteen minutes either way across the year.
