What are the phases of the moon?
The cycle has four named instants and four intermediate shapes. New moon is the moment of alignment between Earth and Sun. Over the following days a waxing crescent thickens until first quarter, when exactly half the visible face is lit and the moon has completed a quarter of its circuit. It grows through waxing gibbous to full moon, the opposite alignment, then shrinks back through waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent to the next new moon. The quarters are named for position in the orbit, not for the half-lit shape, which is why a half moon is called a quarter.
Why does the full moon date change every month?
Because a lunar month and a calendar month are different lengths. One new moon to the next averages 29.530589 days, while calendar months run 28 to 31. The full moon therefore slips about a day earlier each month relative to the calendar, and roughly every two or three years the slippage lets a single calendar month catch two full moons, which is a blue moon. Twelve lunar months add up to about 354.37 days, eleven short of a year, and those eleven days are the entire cause.
The interval is not even constant. The moon's orbit is an ellipse, so it moves faster when nearer the Earth, and the Earth is itself moving around the Sun during the month. Successive full moons can be as much as half a day apart from the average in either direction, which is why any rule of thumb based on a fixed 29 or 30 day gap eventually drifts off the real dates.
