How many days since I quit smoking?
Enter the day you stopped and this counts every day, hour and minute since, along with the milestones people usually mark.
A quit counter does one useful thing: it replaces a vague sense of "a while ago" with a number you can point at. People check it on the hard days, and the number only ever goes up.
Milestones people mark
The early ones come quickly and matter most, because the first fortnight is where most quit attempts end. Day 3 is commonly described as the peak of withdrawal, after which the intensity usually falls. Day 14, day 30 and day 90 are the next common checkpoints, and after that most people switch to counting months and then years.
What the timeline usually looks like
Public health bodies including the NHS and the CDC publish recovery timelines that follow a familiar shape: circulation and lung function improve over the first weeks and months, and the elevated risk of heart disease falls substantially over the years that follow. The exact figures vary by source and by person, so treat any timeline as a general pattern rather than a promise, and speak to a clinician about your own situation. This page is a counter, not medical advice.
Counting the money as well as the days
If you know what you used to spend a day, multiplying it by the day count gives a second number that tends to land harder than the first. A twenty a day habit at ten units a pack is ten units a day, which is 3,650 over a year. Work it out with your own price rather than an average, because the average is never your price.
How the counting works
The total is a count of complete days, not a rounded figure. It increases at midnight in your own timezone rather than in UTC, which is what the dated pages elsewhere on this site use, and every leap day in the period is included, which is why the number can differ by a few days from multiplying years by 365. Weeks are the day total divided by seven, and months use the average calendar month of 30.44 days, so the month figure is an approximation while the day figure is exact.
Nothing you type is transmitted or stored. The date stays in your browser, the arithmetic runs there, and reloading the page clears it.
Questions
- Does a slip reset the counter?
- That is your call. Some people restart from zero, others keep the original date and treat the slip as an event rather than a reset. The counter simply measures from whatever date you give it.
- What if I quit years ago?
- Enter the original date. The counter handles any date back to 1990 and will show the total in days, weeks, months and years.
- Is the count in whole days?
- Yes. It rolls over at midnight in your own timezone, so the number you see is the number of complete days since your quit date.
