How many days since my last drink?
Enter the date of your last drink and this shows the running total in days, weeks and months, with the milestones people commonly track.
A sober day count is the most widely used measure there is, because it needs no interpretation. One number, counted from one date, going in one direction.
Why 30, 60 and 90 come up so often
Those three appear constantly in recovery settings because they are the intervals most support programmes and treatment structures are built around. They are conventions rather than biological thresholds, but conventions are useful: they give a shared vocabulary and a date to aim at.
Counting in days versus counting in years
Early on, days are the right unit, because a day is a long time and each one is worth counting separately. Later the same number becomes unwieldy and most people switch to months and then to an annual date. The counter shows both at once, so you can use whichever unit fits.
Getting support
A counter tracks a number, nothing more. If you are working on your drinking, national health services and organisations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery offer free support, and a GP or doctor can advise on stopping safely, which matters because withdrawal from heavy drinking can be dangerous without supervision.
How the counting works
The total is a count of complete days, not a rounded figure. It increases at midnight in your own timezone rather than in UTC, which is what the dated pages elsewhere on this site use, and every leap day in the period is included, which is why the number can differ by a few days from multiplying years by 365. Weeks are the day total divided by seven, and months use the average calendar month of 30.44 days, so the month figure is an approximation while the day figure is exact.
Nothing you type is transmitted or stored. The date stays in your browser, the arithmetic runs there, and reloading the page clears it.
Questions
- What counts as day one?
- Most people count the first full day after the last drink as day one. If you prefer to count the day of the last drink itself, enter the day before instead.
- Does the counter store my date?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us or saved on a server.
- Can I count from a future date?
- No. This tool counts elapsed days, so the date needs to be today or earlier.
