Life in weeks: a whole life as 4,160 squares

Each small square below is one week. There are 52 across and 80 down, 4,160 in total, which is about 80 years. Enter a birth date and the weeks already lived are filled in. The idea comes from Tim Urban's "Your Life in Weeks", and the point of it is scale: a number of years is abstract, while a page of squares is something you can take in at a glance.

An average, not a forecast – Life expectancy is an average across a whole population in a single year. It is not a prediction about any individual, and no calculator can make one. Treat the figures on this page as a way of putting a lifespan on a scale you can picture, not as a statement about you.

What is a life in weeks chart?

It is a calendar with one box per week, laid out so that an entire lifespan fits on a single screen. Tim Urban published the best known version in 2014 on Wait But Why, drawing a ninety year life as a block of squares. Oliver Burkeman's book "Four Thousand Weeks" takes its title from the same arithmetic. The reason the picture lands when the number does not is that people are poor at holding large counts in mind. Four thousand of anything is a shrug. Four thousand squares on a page is a shape, and the eye reads a shape immediately.

The grid on this page is 52 columns by 80 rows. A column is a week within a year of age, a row is a year, and the numbers running down the left mark every fifth year. Filling it in takes one date and no other information.

How many weeks are in a human life?

Roughly four thousand, if you take a lifespan of about 77 to 80 years. A year is 52.1775 weeks on average, so eighty years is 4,174 weeks and 77.5 years, the NCHS figure for United States in 2022, is 4,044. The grid here runs to 4,160 squares so that it holds a long life comfortably rather than stopping short of one. Where those published figures come from is set out on the life expectancy page.

Why does a row hold 52 weeks and not 52.18?

Because a row has to be a whole number of boxes. A calendar year is 52.1775 weeks, so a row of 52 covers 364 days and falls about a day and a quarter short of a year. Over eighty rows the drift adds up to roughly a year and a half. This is why the row labels are described as years of age rather than exact birthdays: by the bottom of the grid, the row boundary and the birthday have parted company. Every grid of this kind has the same quirk, and most of them do not mention it. If you want the exact figure rather than the drawn one, the age calculator walks real calendar months.

What do you do with a life in weeks grid?

Mostly you look at it. People report two reactions, and they pull in opposite directions. One is that the filled part is larger than expected. The other is that the open part is larger than expected, because a week is a small unit and there turn out to be a great many of them. Both readings are available in the same picture, which is a good argument for not attaching a message to it. A grid is a unit conversion, not an instruction.

If it is useful, it is useful as perspective on how a week is spent, given that a week is the unit most lives are actually organised around. Nothing here suggests anything about your health, and nothing here should be read as advice of any kind.

Is my birth date stored anywhere?

Everything here is worked out in your browser. The date you enter is not sent to us, not logged and not stored, and reloading the page clears it. There is no account, no cookie holding the date, and no request to a server carrying it. You can check by opening your browser's network panel and filling in the grid: nothing goes out.

Questions

How many weeks are in a life?
About 4,000 for a lifespan of roughly 77 years, since a year averages 52.18 weeks. The grid on this page holds 4,160 squares, about 80 years.
How do I make a life in weeks chart?
Enter your birth date above and the chart is drawn for you. The calculation is a subtraction of dates divided by seven, done in your browser.
Does this predict how long I will live?
No, and nothing can. The grid shows weeks already lived against a fixed 4,160 square canvas. Life expectancy figures elsewhere on the site are population averages for a given year, not forecasts for a person.
Why is the last row not a full year?
A row is 52 weeks, which is 364 days, while a calendar year averages 365.2425 days. The rows drift slightly against real birthdays as the grid goes down.
