How the conversions handle daylight saving
A timezone is not an offset. It is a rule about which offset applies on which date, and roughly half the zones on this page change theirs twice a year. The United States moves on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November, the United Kingdom and European Union on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. Those are different dates, so for a stretch of weeks each spring and autumn the familiar five hour gap between New York and London is four instead.
Southern hemisphere zones run the opposite way. Sydney is on summer time through the northern winter, which means its distance from New York changes twice as much across the year as a European zone's does. A few zones sit on offsets that are not whole hours at all: India is UTC+5:30 and Nepal is UTC+5:45. All of that comes out of the database rather than out of a lookup table, so none of it has to be special cased.

- Does this converter handle daylight saving?
- Yes. Every reading is computed for the real date from the IANA database, so a conversion in July uses the summer offset and one in January uses the winter offset.
- What is the difference between EST and EDT?
- They are the same zone at different times of year. Eastern Time is EST from November to March and EDT from March to November. Typing either one here resolves to America/New_York.
- Is GMT the same as UTC?
- As a clock reading, yes, both are UTC+0. As standards they are different things, and the United Kingdom is only on GMT for part of the year because it switches to BST in summer.
