Why the weekday matters

In 2028 it falls on a Wednesday, a working day. Where a fixed-date federal holiday lands midweek, the days either side often see heavy leave bookings, which is worth knowing if you are planning travel around it. Because a common year is 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day, a fixed-date occasion moves forward one weekday each year and two across a leap year. That is why Australia Day cycles through the whole week over a seven-year span rather than repeating on a simple schedule.
